Early Life:
Amitav Ghosh was born in Calcutta on July 11, 1956 in the Bengali Hindu family, lt Col. Shledra Chandra Ghosh, a retired officer of the former Freedom Indian Army. All the boys he was educated at Don School, where he edited The Dawn School Weekly. His contemporaries in Dun included writers Vikram Seth and Ram Guha. After Dun, he got a degree from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi University and Delhi School of Economics. Then he d. Phil won the Inlux Foundation scholarship to complete. In social anthropology at Oxford St Edmund Hall under the supervision of Peter Leinhardt. His first job was in the Indian Express newspaper in New Delhi.
Ghosh lives with his wife, Deborah Baker, laura riding biography in Execmis: The Life of Laura Riding (1993) and author of Little, a senior editor of Brown & Co. They have two children, Lila and Nayan. He has been a partner at the Centre for Studies in Social Sciences, Calcutta and the Centre for Development Studies at Trivandrum. In 1999, Ghosh joined the faculty at Queens College, New York University, as a distinguished professor in comparative literature. He has also been a guest professor in the English Department of Harvard University since 2005. Ghosh later returned to India, starting working on the IBS trilogy, including The Sea of Poppies (2008), Smoke River (2011), and Flood Fire (2015).
